Eating Slowly Can Help Your Digestion, Weight and Overall Health
Eating too fast can have serious health consequences. It contributes to indigestion and consuming way too many calories. Slowing down when you eat can be very beneficial to your health and your weight. Try these simple strategies to slow down when you eat.
1. Relax for two minutes before you eat. Have someone else plate your food if you can and sit at the table and releax. Think about how hungry you really are and take some deep breathes. Relax your legs and abdomen. Set a goal to not start eating until you are relaxed.
2. Lay down your fork. It takes about twenty minutes for your stomach to signal to your brain that it is full. Try putting your fork down between bites. It is important to stay in tune with your bodies changing levels of fullness and satisfaction. Practicing putting your fork down will become natural after a little practice.
3. Turn off your TV. Television distracts you and increases the odds of eating too much and too fast. Turning off the TV when you’re eating will help ensure you eat the right amount at a healthy pace.
4. Enjoy the flavors of your food. After about the fourth bite of food our ability to taste flavors diminishes. If you’re eating because you like the taste of the food slow down and enjoy the flavors while they’re on your toungue. Don’t keep eating just because you love the taste of the food, slowly eat until you’re full and really savor the flavors.
